Description

Built for Every Landscaping Vision

Sandstone logs are the landscaper’s secret weapon – strong enough for structural work, beautiful enough to be the star of the show. Here’s where they shine:

  • Retaining Walls – Hold back the earth in style, with walls that look as good in twenty years as they do today.
  • Garden Steps – Turn a simple staircase into a feature, with stone that’s as tough underfoot as it is stunning to look at.
  • Feature Landscaping – Make a statement. These bold, sculptural blocks bring instant character to gardens and public spaces alike.
  • Seating – Craft natural stone benches your guests will actually want to sit on – built to last, styled to impress.
  • Edging & Boundaries – Give your garden crisp, confident lines with an edge that means business.

B-Grade Sandstone Landscaping Logs

B-Grade sandstone logs are mid-range, budget-friendly quarried stone blocks. They typically feature 2 to 4 sawn sides (usually flat on the top and bottom for stacking) with rough, split-face or rustic edges, minor chips, and tapering depths ranging from 350mm to 550mm, at standard lengths of 1m or 2m. Many B Grade logs actually start out as A Grade stock but don’t quite make the cut – think chipped corners, tapering widths or inconsistent colour – leaving them with fewer imperfections than C Grade, just not smooth and uniform enough to be classed A Grade.

Description and Tolerances

  • Sawn vs. Split – Sawn flat on top and bottom for secure placement, but ends and faces may be untrimmed or naturally split.
  • Dimensions – Standard heights hover around 500mm with wider tolerances (up to ±30mm to 100mm variation), and variable depths or wedge shapes.
  • Appearance – Earthy and rugged, with natural colour variations (creams, buffs, pinks and browns) and minor edge chipping.

Common Applications

  • Retaining Walls – Perfect for residential or rural earth retention where a rustic aesthetic is desired, or where lower courses can be partially buried.
  • Boundary and Side/Rear Walls – Cost-effective for long fence lines or property borders away from primary street views.
  • Garden Edging and Terracing – Used to define raised garden beds, paths, and multi-level backyard tiers.
  • Landscaping Features – Ideal for informal bush gardens, rural properties, and natural seating blocks.

B Grade is our most frequently used block, favoured by our structural landscapers because it’s easy to work with and saves on labour costs. Its tolerances give clients a favoured in-between look – rough and rustic, but not as formal as an A Grade brick shape. B Grade blocks are reasonably priced, look great, are readily available, and suit most engineered projects – typically saving clients an average of $55 per block compared with our premium A Grade stock.

As sandstone is a natural product of the earth, some chips, cracks and colour inconsistencies should be expected – these are part of the beautiful natural character of the stone. B Grade Sandstone Blocks contain minor chips, bulges and surface variations that give each block a unique look, while remaining strong and stackable for a rugged, character-filled finish. They work well across a wide range of landscaping and structural projects – natural-looking retaining walls, garden beds and boundary walls – and suit informal landscapes, rural properties, and any project that celebrates the unrefined beauty of natural stone.

  • Natural Aesthetic – Each B Grade block has unique imperfections that give projects a rustic, natural look.
  • Cost-Effective – A sturdy, economical choice for landscaping and wall building.
  • Strength and Stability – Despite their imperfections, B Grade blocks are durable and can be stacked securely for lasting installations.

Looking for something more refined? Our B Premium Grade Sandstone Blocks are crafted for strength, durability and a uniform finish. With consistent sizing and a clean, high-end look, these blocks have 2 sawn sides and 2 sawn ends, making them perfect for retaining walls, landscaping and structural applications where a more polished result is needed.

Why These Logs Stand Out

  • Size – A generous 1m long x 500mm high x 500mm deep, built for big impact.
  • B Grade Quality – Started life as A Grade stock, with minor imperfections like chipped corners or tapering widths that keep the price down.
  • Genuine Sydney Sandstone – Tough, timeless, and quarried from the source.
  • One-of-a-Kind Colour – No two logs are the same, so every project gets its own natural signature.
  • Heavy-Duty by Design – Built for the big jobs, from sprawling retaining walls to statement features.

The Payoff

  • Built to Last – We’re talking decades, through every season Mother Nature throws at it.
  • Great Value Finish – Solid, usable blocks with minor natural variation that only adds character.
  • Set and Forget – Natural sandstone that asks almost nothing of you after installation.
  • Endless Flexibility – Walls, steps, seating, features – one material, unlimited possibilities.
  • Instant Value – Nothing lifts a landscape’s character (and your property’s appeal) quite like natural stone.

Colour as Unique as Your Project

Every log tells its own story, with natural variation that keeps things interesting. Expect a beautiful mix of:

  • Creams and whites
  • Occasional pinks and oranges
  • Dramatic ironstone banding for real character

Batches vary, so give us a call to confirm what’s available before you order – we’ll help you get the look you’re after.

Getting It Right: Installation Tips

  • Set your logs on a solid concrete footing – the foundation of a wall that lasts.
  • These are heavy-duty blocks, so plan for proper lifting gear like an excavator or bobcat.
  • Building a retaining wall? Add drainage gravel and geofabric behind it to keep water pressure in check.
  • Go dry-stacked for a natural, rustic look, or mortared for something more polished – the choice is yours.
